sh1.2 billion bridge in Budalangi collapses days after Uhuru launched it, several injured

Report by Pharis Kinyua- Jamhuri News

A fortnight after President Uhuru Kenyatta hailed the construction of sh1.2 billion Sigiri Bridge in Budalangi constituency, it has collapsed.

The multi-million shilling funded project tumbled down on Monday leaving several masons injured.

The bridge links Bunyala South and North areas.

Its construction is as a result of great hue and cry from residents of the area after nine people lost their lives in 2014 when trying to cross River Nzoia usinga canoe.

On June 14 when the President visited the site to see the progress of the bridge’s construction, he said it was a great milestone for Jubilee.

Movement of people was expected to be eased as the bridge links the region to markets and schools which were previously inaccessible.

It was expected to be completed by mid-July and over 1000 people are anticipated to be using the bridge on a daily basis.

Elsewhere, Deputy President William Ruto has taken a swipe at the opposition over their pronouncement that they will legalize illicit brews should they win August polls.

Speaking in Nyandarua County after attending a Church Service on Sunday, Ruto Chided Raila Odinga led outfit for allegedly eroding the gains made by Jubilee in the fight against illicit brews.

He cited that alcoholism and drug abuse are vices that have greatly affected Kenyan youths and any move to legalize it does not augur well for the nation.

Ruto also said that a leader like the former Prime Minister should be at the forefront in fighting such vices in the community and not promoting it.

“We already have a serious problem with alcoholism and drug abuse. It will be a step in the wrong direction if we legalize chang’aa and busaa.

“Pray for the opposition which intends to legalize illicit brews to have a change of heart in this matter,” read a statement from his communication unit.
