US-based NGO to help Kenyan FGM victims in regaining ‘lost pleasure’

An American-based NGO has given hope to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) victims in Kenya with their mission to offer clitoral restorative surgery.

The NGO-Clitoraid spokesperson Nadine Gary in a statement on Wednesday as told by the Star said the mission in Kenya will run up to May 13.

She did not, however, state the specific location where the mission will be conducted. The mission comes just when the world celebrates the clitoris awareness week starting May 3 to 10.

A total of 40 women will be operated on by Dr. Marci Bowers, a gynecological surgeon working with the NGO.

“Bower will restore sexual pleasure for 40 patients,” said Gary in her statement.

She added that many victims of FGM have contacted the NGO seeking to be operated on. “Those having surgery next week are only a few of the many survivors who have contacted us, desperately seeking to be made whole again.”

Maitrya Clitoraid will provide surgery that repairs the damage inflicted on the clitoris.

Bowers will also train local surgeons on how to conduct a proper surgery to restore the normal working of the clitoris among the victims.

France’s clinical sexologist Clemence Linard together with her Kenyan colleague Tammary Esho will offer counseling sessions to the victims.

The practice is outdated and the Kenyan government has made collaborative efforts in ending it.

Pastoral communities in Kenya predominantly practice FGM. But through government’s anti-FGM body, the practice has been nipped in the bud though not completely.
