Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir has pledged to help over 120 Kenyan varsity students stranded in Sudan.

The MP on Wednesday said that he had offered Ksh1 million to have then evacuated. He said that the county government of Mombasa will also chip in.

He spoke to some of the troubled parents at Mvita’s CDF offices.

Nassir said that he has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Kenyan Embassy in Sudan and has also spoken with one of the Kenyan student leaders.

He said that he also engaged several airlines to provide charter services in evacuating the stranded students and he settled on Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways due to its affordability.

“They have reduced the rate to $490 (49000) per person and we are hoping the figure goes lower,” he told Nation in an exclusive interview.

The Mvita MP added that 90 percent of the students are from Mombasa.

They are expected back in the country latest by Friday.

“Once they are back from lunch, they should actually fly direct to Mombasa because almost 90 percent of the students are from Mombasa.”

He noted that given their financial situation – most are on scholarships – they may not be in a position to pay for quarantine in line with the Ministry of Health’s directive for all inbound passengers.

Therefore, he has asked the Kenyan Embassy in Sudan to ensure that the students get tested for coronavirus and get certification which they will present to Kenyans health officials upon return and self-quarantine in their homes.

The students on Monday turned to social media where the appealed to the Kenyan government to recuse them.

They said that they have been out of class for three months and had no money to buy basic things such as food.
