7 Kenyans making it in international football

The number of Kenyans flying the flag high as they play in international football teams continues to soar.

However, just a few names, Victor Wanyama, McDonald Mariga, Michael Olunga and Dennis Oliech are known to Kenyans.

Here are eight more young Kenyans who have are flying the flag beyond the borders in matters football according to the Nairobian.

Handwalla Bwana

The 19-year old was born in Mombasa in 1999. He spent six years of his formative life at a refugee camp in Kakuma where he developed interest in football.

Together with his family, they flew to Atlanta, US where they settled in 2010 and later moved to Seattle where he attended Ballard High School. Currently, he is playing for Sounders FC of Major League Soccer

His family was resettled in the United States in 2010, initially in Atlanta, but later in Seattle, where he attended Ballard High School.

Amos Ekhalie

Amos, 29, is a Mombasa-born footballer. He is a midfielder in Finland with IFK Mariehamn in the Finnish Veikkausliiga.

He once featured for Harambee Stars in a friendly match against Liberia on November 16, 2016.

Ismael Athuman Gonzalez

Ismael  is a footballer who currently plays for Spanish Club CF Fuenlabrada. He plays as a central defender and also a defensive midfielder.

Though not born in Kenya, his father- Said Ali Athuman Mbaga is a Kenyan who married a Spanish woman.

Ismael, 22,  made his debut for Harambee Stars in May 2016 . He has also played youth football with UD Vecindario and UD Las Palmas.

Joshua Lelan Kemboi

Kemboi first made his debut with Harambee Stars in 2016 in a match against Uganda.The 23-year-old began his career in England’s Rams’ Academy and in 2014.

He made five appearances on loan in League One with Swindon Town. He also played four times in the National League for Gateshead on loan in 2013.  In 2015, he signed for Northampton Town where he made 13 appearances. Currently, he is playing for Crawley Town FC.

 

Lawrence Olum

The 33-year old is a professional Kenyan footballer currently playing for Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer of America.

Olum started off his football career the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division in 2007, before moving to the Minnesota Thunder in March 2009.

He later played for the Austin Aztex and Orlando City, before moving to Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer in September 2011.

In May 2014, he made his international debut for Harambee Stars in a 1–0 victory over Comoros.

Jonah Ayunga

Ayunga a Kenyan international forward whose debut with Harambee Stars was on August 5, 2016.

The 20-year old is a striker with Brighton & Hove Albion’s development team in England. He started off his football career at Bridport Youth in 2007.

Christian Bwamy

The Nairobi-born footballer is a winger for Follo FK in Norway. He nurtured his career while playing for Mathare Youth Sports Association in Kenya.

Born in Nairobi, Christian Mwenelwata Bwamy is a Kenyan winger. He currently plays for Follo FK in Norway. While in Kenya, where he started his career before going overseas, Bwami played for The Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA).

Kamau brothers (Ian and Bruce)

The two brothers developed love for football at around the same time. The eldest, 26-year old Ian and his younger brother Bruce, 23, currently play football in Australia for different clubs.

Their parents relocated from Nairobi to Australia. Ian started off as a footballer at Oakleigh Cannons in the Victorian Premier League while Bruce kicked off his dream at Adelaide United.

Bruce currently plays for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australian top flight league, Hyundai A-League.
