The Mombasa County Government has launched equipment worth Sh15 million geared towards the fighting of the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus.

The five flogging machines will get rid of mosquitoes within the county’s six constituencies after an outbreak of the virus a week ago.

So far, 120 cases have been reported. Thirty two have been confirmed to be indeed.

Changamwe and Mvita constituencies are the most affected by the scourge.

The Chikungunya virus is characterized by a high fever, fatigue, pain in the joints among other symptoms.

Health officials in Mombasa have urged residents to seek medical attention should they exhibit any of the following symptoms

They have also warned the residents against seeking herbal regimens extracted from pawpaw leaves because it could damage the kidneys if taken in large quantities.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho expressed optimism in ridding the county of mosquitoes that are behind the massive spread of the virus.

“Vector control will effectively deal with chikungunya. “We hope this 10-day operation will fully eradicate chikungunya and dengue fever if possible, and significantly reduce the number of malaria cases,” he told the press on Monday at his office according to the Star.

The Governor who has come under sharp criticism over deplorable sanitation in the county said he will ensure this is addressed as another measure to fight the virus outbreak.
