A doctor who had been suspended over surgical mix-up at Kenyatta National Hospital has been allowed back to work.

The trainee doctor conducted a brain surgery on the wrong patient.

On Thursday, KNH board chair Mark Bor said the matter will now be handled by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board as stipulated by the law.

“Effective immediately, the board will not engage in any disciplinary matter as the issue is supposed to be handled by the medical practitioners and dentists board,” he said as quoted by the Star.

Suspension letters of other medics involved in the surgery were also withdrawn.

Following the mix-up, KNH suspended the admission rights of a Neurosurgery Registrar and issued him with a show-cause letter on March 2.

A ward nurse, a theatre receiving nurse and an anaesthetist were interdicted for the role they played in the surgery.

A few days later, KNH CEO Lily Koros and officer in charge of clinical affairs were later sent on compulsory leave to allow investigations be conducted.

Health CS Sicily Kariuki said the hospital’s board will submit its preliminary report on Friday while KMPDU will present a second report after seven days.

One of the patients whose skull was opened in the mix-up was discharged yesterday. His recovery is progressing well.
