Varsity students charged with extorting Sh100, 000 from ex-MP Jakoyo Midiwo

Two students from Multi-Media University and a personal assistant to an MP were on Wednesday charged at Milimani Law Courts for extortion and cyber-bullying legislators

Derick Kimutai, Edwin Nderitu and Derick Ochieng Ogayo were charged before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, reports Nairobi News.

Their arraignment in court came a day after MPs on Tuesday complained of cyber-bullying. They lamented they have been receiving obscene photos of naked women while women legislators have been getting obscene male photos.

Nderitu and Kimutai who are engineering students at the varsity and are aged 19, are alleged to have extorted Sh100, 000 from former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo under the pretense of having been sent by Murang’a Women Rep Sabina Chege.

They are reported to have met Midiwo at Golden Spot Restaurant in Nairobi on March 8 when they were arrested.

Midiwo said that they had been using a mobile number bearing Chege’s name.

They pleaded with the court to release them on bail so they can continue with their studies in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

They were released on Sh30, 000 cash bail. The case will be heard on April 11.

Ogayo, the PA to Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo was charged with insulting Rangwe MP Lilian Gogo by publishing a statement on the ODM page with the intent to discredit Gogo in the eyes of her constituents.

He is reported to have made the offence on diverse dates between February 1 and March 10 this year where together with us not before the courts, they publishing the discrediting statement and unprintable words.

He was released on Sh50, 000 cash bail and the case will be mentioned on April 11.
