Machakos Senator Boniface Kabaka has died at the Nairobi Hospital a week after he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) while in critical condition.

His illness sparked a debate as he fell ill in the wee hours of Friday night last week at an apartment in Kilimani where he had spent the night with another woman , Esther Nthenya Muli, a secondary school teacher in Makueni County.

Police reports indicate that Kabaka chauffeured himself to the apartments on Thursday afternoon and Muli arrived soon after.

They ordered food and drinks from the apartment’s 3Dee restaurant which was served by one of the employees.

It is then that he is said to have fallen ill and collapsed. Muli called for help and the Senator was wheeled to hospital.

Though not much was said about his condition, he is said to have undergone surgery but remained in the ICU until his demise on Friday.

Muli, on the other hand, was arrested and taken to Kilimani Police Station where she was booked until Monday when she was presented before court.

But police asked the court to allow her further detention for seven days to conduct further investigations into the case where she was accused of “attempted murder” on the Senator.

However, tests conducted revealed that the senator was not poisoned as earlier thought.

Her lawyer Dan Maanzo on Wednesday said that her client was released on a free bond and was no longer a person of interest in the case. Police also received a report of the doctor’s report on the senator’s cause of death.

On Thursday, his family issued a statement saying that the senator was recuperating in hospital urging Machakos residents not to fall for fake news.

“We wish to inform the People of Kenya and Residents of Machakos County in particular that Senator Hon Boniface Mutinda Kabaka, Advocate is recuperating at Nairobi Hospital.

“Please avoid or ignore the distressing rumours and fake news and continue praying for the full recovery of our brother, father, friend, pillar and senator,” part of the statement read.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua had also said that the senator was on his way to recovery albeit still in critical condition.

His body was moved from the Nairobi Hospital to the Lee Funeral Home.
