Maina Ndegwa, the young Kenyan ‘meme lord’ earning Ksh200,000 monthly from comical threads

If you are a Facebook person, you may have come across hilarious memes created by the amazing Maina Ndegwa.

Usually, his meme are satirical in nature and bring out humour in the best ways possible.

But who is this man behind the tickling memes that have gotten Kenyans talking of his great talent?

Stephen Maina Ndegwa is the brains behind the viral memes that usually rope in among others hilarious photos of President Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto, Ferdinand Waititu and Mike Sonko with texts that describes everything in pure comic.

In a recent interview with the Standard, Ndegwa said that when he started out, he did it for pure fun and had just 16 followers on his Facebook page but before long, his memes went viral and shot to 2,500 followers.

The Kagumo High School alumni says that he found humour in apolitical art the more the reason he is currently pursuing journalism at the Technical University of Mombasa.

Having tried filming, writing and unsuccessfully getting into radio, he decided to give a shot in comic and this is where the idea to create stories using photos of politicians was born.

Being a creative, he used Photoshop to create his texts in the photos based on what was trending at the moment but brought out a humourous side of the story. This he says, is what made him apolitical because he captioned the photos based on what every Kenyan citizen experiences in day to day life.

“Fun videos are the most shared on the internet. Memes next. Most of the WhatsApp status shared nowadays are memes,” he says adding that he keeps abreast with trending topics on social media.

The joy of it all, he says, is that the humour turned into a money-generating project for him and in a good month, he is sure of taking home Ksh200,000.

In his memes which he shares with 86,000 fans, companies have found an easy way to advertise with him. They have capitalized on his wide fan base and he comically places their ads in his memes effortlessly.

In less than two hours in a day, Ndegwa is guaranteed of making at least Ksh30,000 and in a good week, he can land about five of these corporate ads.

He describes memes as a new way of blogging adding that his focus is now on growing his brand.

 “Blogging will not always be old school. Meme making will be the new art of blogging. Memes are a world of “ifs” and that makes people imagine. I want people to see the world in a different way. To reimagine the world where we can all have fun,” he adds.
