A Chinese tourist died at 3pm on Sunday while descending from Mt Kenya’s highest point.

His name is yet to be revealed to the press.

The Chinese man is reported to have slipped from the Batian point (5,199 metres, 17,057 ft) and fell off to about 60m down and landed on a cliff.

On Monday, Kenya Wildlife Services Communication Officer Ngugi Gecaga said the deceased was in the company of five other people.

He also said that the tourist went against advice from the officers to use a rope.

“We usually advise out amateur climbers to have ropes but the tourist said he did not need one because he was experienced. He had even climbed Mt Everest,” said Gecaga as told by the Star.

KWS has since convened a meeting to plot on how they will recover the body of the Chinese man from the cliff.

“It will take between 24-72 hours to get to the body because of the weather conditions. There is a lot of snow up there but we are going to try our best to get it in good time,” said Gecaga.
