Kiambu residents living in Githurai 45, Ruiru sub-county are on high alert following a cholera outbreak.

Yesterday, at least 24 people from Kiambiu area in Githurai were admitted to Kiambu Level Five Hospital after showing symptoms akin to those of Cholera.

Medical superintendent Jesse Ngugi said since last week in Friday, they have had an influx of patients being treated for diarrhea. Since then more have come with the same symptoms.

“Most of the cases are from Githurai estate and its environs.  We are treating and discharging them while others are admitted according to their conditions,” said the medical superintendent according to the Star.

Doctors suspect the outbreak could have been a result of contaminated water following heavy rains pounding the country and also because of the presence of raw sewage in parts of Githurai which is likely to have contaminated water.

“We urge residents of the affected areas to take proper precautions to prevent them being affected,” Ngugi warned.

Ngugi said that they have set up an isolation ward at Kiambu Hospital to handle the situation.

The situation could also be aggravated by lack of water in several estates within Kiambu.

Over the weekend, a water pipe channeling water to Nairobi burst after a contractor at Kugeria estate in Kiambu County ruptured the pipe.

This effectively rendered 15 estates within Nairobi and Kiambu waterless.

In Kiambu, Githurai 45, Mwiki, Kahawa Barracks, Kahawa Wendani and Kahawa Sukari estates will go for days without water until the pipe is fixed.
