New changes at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation have seen the dreaded Flying Squad unit disbanded and all its officers disarmed.

It emerged on Thursday according to Daily Nation, that the drastic move was inspired by revelations some of the officers in the dreaded unit have been engaging in criminal activities.

They are required to return all police property including handcuffs, police uniform going by orders given on Monday.

The unit according to Directorate of Criminal Investigation where it falls in will be reconstituted afresh with new officers on the unit required to undergo training.

Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) as well as from other units within the police service will make up the Flying Squad.

George Kinoti, the new DCI boss is set to reconstitute major units within the DCI.

The unit was formed back in 1995 after increased cases of car robberies and muggings in the city. It later spread out across the country.

The crack unit has its officers dressed in plain clothes, ride in unmarked cars and more often than not, track hardcore criminals.

However, this is not the first time the unit has been disbanded. In 2006, it suffered the same fate and was reconstituted afresh with officers from paramilitary GSU.

In recent cases, a police officer attached at Jogoo House was beaten black and blue by DCI officers attached to Central Police Station in a mugging.

In a separate case, investigations on how a businesswoman was robbed Sh800, 000 after she got out of a bank revealed that the attackers colluded with Flying Squad officers.
