NTV’s investigative editor Dennis Okari clinched an award at the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) 2021 over his ‘Red Alert’ exposé.

AJEA held the 9th edition of the event on Tuesday.

Okari triumphed with the ‘Red Alert’ exposé which he did in 2019 on a trend by supermarkets whereby they used harmful chemicals to preserve meat.

In his exposé, Okari lifted the lid on how rogue supermarkets used Sodium Metabisulphite to keep their meat looking fresh even after having it for over a week.

The exposé drew anger among Kenyans who had fallen prey to the dangerous antics by some supermarkets.

Following Okari’s piece, the then Health CS Cecily Kariuki ordered public health officials to conduct a probe.

Ministry officials were later seen in supermarkets where they collected samples for testing.

Public health officials in the counties were also instructed to heighten surveillance on foods sold in supermarkets.

KTN’s Timothy Otieno was crowned the Journalist of The Year following his story “Access Denied”.

Citizen TV’s Waihiga Mwaura was also feted in the investigative story category due to his ‘Mara Heist’ feature in 2019.

The exposé saw the arrest of the culprits who had been siphoning millions of shillings from the institution.
