Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua on Thursday lost his daughter 25-year-old Nelly Waithera after two matatus crushed her to death in Nairobi’s central business district.

Waithera was sandwiched between two matatus along Murang’a Lane as she crossed from Tom Mboya Avenue in the morning.

One of the matatus was reversing and it crushed Waithera against another stationary matatu. She sustained serious head injuries thereof.

She was quickly rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in an ambulance for treatment but died hours later while receiving treatment.

Her body was moved to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital pending an autopsy.

She is not the first pedestrian to have died as a result of being pressed against two PSVs in the CBD.

In 2018, a middle-aged woman was also crushed to death after being sandwiched between two buses along Luthuli Avenue.

The woman is reported to have been crossing the road when a Kenya Mpya bus hit her. She was caught between it and the vehicle that was ahead.

The driver of the bus sped off, ignoring calls from the public to stop.

This incident triggered an uproar by Kenyans who condemned the act and called on police to do their work.
