Deputy President William Ruto is embroiled in a war of words with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

This is after the DP appeared in an interview on Sunday at Citizen TV where he alleged that Chebukati has been having “late night meetings” with the opposition.

“I’m aware Chebukati is meeting NASA leaders at night,” remarked the DP.

He added: “That could be why he is sending messages here and there, sensational memos. I am asking him to stop writing memos and concentrate on delivering a credible election.”

Asked if he has evidence to back his claim, Ruto said the media house should invite the IEBC Chair and let him defend himself.

“If the night meetings are untrue, let him come out and say it….we are telling Chebukati that he should stop the night meetings and preside over the election.”

However, Chebukati in a statement on Monday dismissed the DP’s claims terming them as “false, baseless and reckless”.

He said he reads malice in such accusations.

“They shall not succeed to derail me from the immediate goal I have of delivering to Kenyans free, fair and credible election,” Chebukati maintained as quoted by the Star.

Ruto took issues with a memo from Chebukati to IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba saying it was internally meant for the Commission and not the public.

In the memo, Chebukati highlighted 12 issues which he wanted Chiloba to give answers to.

Since it was leaked to the media last week, it has caused sharp divisions within the poll agency.

NASA Principal Moses Wetangula hit out at Ruto over his claims of night meetings with Chebukati.

“You have no capacity to throw the first stone,” he tweeted on Sunday.
