Duale tells off ICC over new plot to revive Uhuru, Ruto cases

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has once again ruffled feathers with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

On Sunday, Duale attacked ICC’s Senior Trial Lawyer Anton Steynberg for his pronouncement that he will revive collapsed cases against President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.

The Garissa Township MP said that ICC is bent on fulfilling another personal motive other than social justice.

“It is unbelievable that the court is waiting for a particular government to take over so that it revives cases which collapsed. This is no longer about justice but witch-hunt, and revenge,” said Duale.

He spoke during a public rally in Bungoma County where he campaigned for Jubilee.

His statement was indirectly referring to the opposition which he has criticized in the past as having vested interest in Kenyan ICC cases.

He added the cases were thrown out due to lack of merit and Steynberg’s pronouncement shows the cases are politically motivated.

“But for the court to say it is longing for a future Kenyan regime that will fully cooperate with it to revive the cases is utter nonsense. We want to tell them that we knew from the word go what the court was after but should know that Jubilee will win the next election by a landslide,” he warned.

Steynberg had earlier said that the investigation into the Kenyan cases were shoddy.

He also said that ICC played an important part in ensuring that Kenya remained peaceful during the 2013 elections.

“I like to think that ICC having its eyes firmly on Kenya was a deterrent factor among many other factors including the fact the PEV was so severe that it shocked the whole country into a recalibration and self-introspection.”
