EU mission ‘concerned’ by Raila’s no election stand

The European Union has warned that the “no election” call by NASA leader Raila Odinga could damage the democratic functioning of institutions.

NASA has reiterated there will be no repeat polls on October 26.

It is not yet clear how the coalition plans to achieve this but it could ask its supporters to boycott the polls.

In the event this happens, then, the repeat polls if they are held will be declared null and void.

NASA has been holding street protest which starting Monday [today] will be held five days a week in push for reforms at IEBC.

EU mission led my Marietje Schaake also cited that amendments to elections law by Jubilee was also stifling democracy.

She pointed out that the timing of introducing the changes was wrong.

“Worryingly, there is also concern that “no election” means Nasa supporters could obstruct polling and tallying,” said she according to Daily Nation.

She called for dialogue between the two leaders saying it is paramount at this juncture.

“Dialogue and cooperation are urgently needed for compromise so that there can be a peaceful electoral process with integrity and transparency and Kenyans can choose their president.”

But President Uhuru Kenyuatta has ruled out the possibility of holding talks with Raila.

Uhuru said Kenyans have the last say in who their leader will be and will not allow mediation talks to be the basis of giving the electorate their next leader.

“We however will not be pushed to sit and talk with someone whose main need is to just clinch power,” charged the President during a Jubilee rally in Nyeri.

The mission however, lauded IEBC for implementing someof its suggestions in the run up to October 26-date for repeat poll.

Before the repeat poll, EU mission had drafted about 18 points on reforms and out of this, nine were directly affecting the IEBC.

“If implemented as planned, they will provide a foundation for an improved technical process, with stronger transparency and integrity measures,” she said.

Schaake said the mission will monitor the repeat polls with special interest on result transmission.

“Following the Supreme Court’s decision and detailed judgment, the EU mission will focus particularly on the results process, looking at integrity and transparency. A key part of transparency is that the IEBC be clear about any deficiencies, so any errors that occur can be seen and discussed with stakeholders.”

Of the nine suggestions to IEBC, EU mission had asked the commission to engage stakeholders regularly, ensure all Form 34A from 40, 883 polling stations are sent through the KIEMS kit and develop a transparent system for counting, tallying and transmission of results.
