The family of the late Nyeri Governor Dr. Wahome Gakuru will receive Sh66 million if a proposal by Nyeri MCAs is adopted.

The county lawmakers proposed that the family of the deceased governor be given Sh36 million for compensation, Sh10 million for burial expenses and Sh20 million will be for insurance.

Nyeri County Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee chaired by Gibson Wahinya tabled the report in the House on Thursday for debate before it is adopted, reports the Star.

The late Nyeri Governor died in a road accident along Thika-Murang’a highway on November 7.

His official Mercedes Benz rammed into a guard rail. He was pronounced dead on arrival to Thika Level Five Hospital where he was rushed for treatment.

Gakuru had earlier complained that his official car was faulty.

Following his death, his deputy Mutahi Kahiga was sworn-in as Nyeri Governor. He will serve upto 2022.

If the motion is passed, he will sign it.

However, Nyeri residents have expressed their concern with the amount of money to be given to the family.

Charles Kinyua, a resident in Nyeri Town said the amount is too much.

“We grieve with the family of the late Governor but this amount is too much to be honest, it can be channeled to other development projects because we are lagging behind,” he said.
