High Court denies Deya bail, gives prosecution 120 days to complete case

The High Court has denied bail to televangelist and self-proclaimed “miracle worker” Gilbert Deya.

The High Court upheld an earlier ruling by a Magistrate’s Court.

Through his lawyer John Swaka, Deya moved to the High Court to challenge the decision by Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.

But Justice Luka Kimaru maintained reasons given by prosecution to oppose bond application were not compelling enough.

He issued a 120-days ultimatum for the prosecution to close its case else the court’s honour’s Deya plea for bail.

Andayi had earlier in August dismissed Deya’s bind application and gave the prosecution two hearing dates in October to line up all witnesses to the case else he grants the televangelist bail.

Swaka last week protested that the prosecution was yet to provide all documents relating to the trial.

Deya has been remanded the Kamiti Maximum Prison awaiting his trial.

He is facing five charges of stealing five children between 2002 and 2004.

He was deported from the UK in July and remanded at Kamiti.

He protested the deplorable state of the cell saying it is not habitable and that Kenyan authorities were in breach of his extradition agreement.

The case will be heard on October 9 and 16.
