The 79-year old Benga artiste is a household name in many Kenyan homes. His music is on a class of its own as many people say.

It is punctuated by a general lesson of passing out advice on various issues that affect the society.

In his formative years in the music industry-1970s and 1990s Kamaru had run-ins with the powers that be.

In 1996, according to the Star, he became a nationwide sensation after the release of his hit song “Darling ya mwarimu” which caused a nationwide teachers’ strike.

The then leadership of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) took offense with the song.

The battle trickled down to Parliament where the song was debated in Parliament and it took Mzee Jomo Kenyatta who the President at the time, to cool down the tempers.

Through his music, he became close to retired President Daniel Moi but they fell out after his support for multi-partism.
