Journalists stage protest in the city as one is arraiged in court

A Nation Media Group Journalist who was arrested on Sunday for allegedly soliciting a bribe to write a damaging story has appeared before a Milimani Court in Nairobi today.

He is being represented by Senior Counsel James Orengo and former LSK boss Apollo Mboya.

During the Monday court session as reported by Daily Nation, the state moved in to file a miscellaneous application against the Sunday Nation writer.

But his lawyers objected to the move arguing that they had not been served. This prompted the Magistrate  to order that the state  serves Menya’s defense team by noon when the case is expected to be heard.

Details about who he was to solicit a bribe from are still held in secrecy with police remaining tight-lipped on the matter.

Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery while responding to question from whom Menya was soliciting the bribe, he remained non-committal stating “the court will decide whether to release Menya or not.”

His appearance to court comes even as Journalists from across the country are set to stage a demonstration today in protest of Menya’s arrest.

The protest has been organized by Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ).

Menya was picked up by DCI detectives at Nation Centre on Sunday afternoon.

He was accused of asking for a bribe to kill a certain story implicating two civil servants working under the Friends for Jubilee Foundation-a lobby group tasked with mobilization of resources for Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.

According to the law, they may have breached their work ethics.

The opposition while commenting on the matter bashed Jubilee for allegedly muzzling the media.

Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke on Monday said Jubilee is stifling the independence of the media.

He also said Jubilee engineered the whole thing as a popular Jubilee blogger was first to break the news accompanied by a live photo of Menya in handcuffs and while at the DCI headquarters.
