Raila is being investigated over alleged hate speech and incitement remarks

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has maintained his ministry will probe opposition boss Raila Odinga over remarks he purportedly made while in Kajiado County in the past week.

Raila is under fire after claims that he told Maa community not to sell their land and that non-locals in the area should leave.

Nkaissery who hails from Kajiado Central termed the statements by Raila as unfortunate.

“Utterances by somebody who is seeking to be the President of this country are unfortunate and amount to incitement,” said the CS on Sunday as told by Daily Nation.

He added that in his tenure as Kajiado Central MP, he worked hard to inculcate the value of peace and harmony among different communities in Kajiado.

“Having come from Kajiado Central, I made sure as the then-member of Parliament that people live harmoniously,” said Nkaissery.

He said they are waiting for further instructions from National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) before DCI officers embarks on the investigation.

“We are waiting for instructions from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) because the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will investigate and the DPP will prosecute.”

Earlier, Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju wrote to NCIC to investigate Raila.

But on Sunday, Jubilee camp led by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale demanded for a public apology from the NASA Presidential candidate.

However, in his defense, Raila said that his statements were quoted out of context by Jubilee to gain political mileage.

He said his statement was a call in reference to alleviation of poverty.

“I talked about land in the context of poverty alleviation and the Jubilee government stands accused of depriving the people of Kajiado to the point of selling their land for a song,” the former Prime Minister stated.

ODM Director of Communication Philip Etale on Sunday in a press statement accused Jubilee of spreading propaganda using the alleged statement that Raila made in Kajiado.

He also said Jubilee is behind the distribution of hate leaflets that were found in Kajiado on Sunday morning.
