Kenyan photographer’s work displayed in US Times Square

Polly Irungu, a Kenyan based in the US is celebrating her latest mileage as a professional photographer after her work was featured in US Times Square by Nasdaq.

Nasdaq is currently running a campaign dubbed; Amplifying Black Voices where outstanding work by people of colour is being featured on Nasdaq MarketSite, a seven-storey tower in Times Square.

The work is accompanied by a brief profile of the artiste.

In Nasdaq’s recent feature, Irungu, the founder of Black Women Photographers (BWP) had her artistry work plastered in Times Square.

Irungu who doubles up as a multimedia journalist currently working with New York Public Radio (WYNC) as a Digital Content Editor confessed that it was not easy picking what to display.

The Nairobi-born photographer stated “I chose these photos to showcase black women in all their glory. I want members of my Black Women Photographers (BWP) community to remember their power, their joy and to never forget who they are.”

She founded on July 7 as a “digital database for Black Women and non-binary photographers” which is now supporting creatives showcase their work during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to promote inclusivity in the industry.

Since its launch, BWP has been offering a stipend to over 70 “Black Women” and also holds interviews with the big names in the industry to help the black women progress with their careers in photography.

Currently living in Brooklyn, New York City, Irungu’s work has been published in the Washington Post, BuzzFeed, CNN among others.

AT WNYC she manages the outlet’s social media and the national NPR show “The Takeaway.”
