Raila: No demos on polling day for NASA supporters

NASA supporters should stay away from polling stations and should not demonstrate on Thursday, Raila Odinga has instructed.

In an interview with BBC on Tuesday, he said his supporters will not be part of the sham elections slated for Thursday.

“There are two forces here; those who want to go on with sham elections irrespective of consequences and those who are saying “no, it’s is not right to do it”,” said the NASA leader.

Earlier, Raila had stated October 26-repeat poll date would be a demonstration day for his coalition.

He said NASA would hold mother of all demonstrations on that day.

“Demonstrations will continue. October 26 will be the biggest demonstration of them all.”

He justified his call for demonstration on Thursday saying that Jubilee has militarized politics in Kenya.

Raila said a clique of Jubilee supporters donned in military regalia have been running around “trying to militarize Kenyan politics”.

“You find even Jubilee women politicians in military jungle fatigues basically intimidating the electorates in this country,” he said.

He insisted he will not participate in the polls because he has no faith in IEBC.

Raila added that IEBC was trying to hoodwink Kenyans by saying CEO Ezra Chiloba he is a three-week leave.

“This is the first time I’m taking leave since my son was born. He turns two years (old) in two weeks’ time,” Chiloba told Reuters.

But, the CEO according to Raila has been reporting for his duty at his Anniversary Towers office as early as 7am.

“Today (Monday) at exactly 7am in the morning, Chiloba was in office, and he is still in office as we speak. We will not be treated as fools.”

But President Uhuru Kenyatta maintains that he is ready for Thursday’s poll.

The President on Monday when he met IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati at Harambee House said he has no demands on IEBC except it conducts polls on Thursday as obligated.

“We made it clear that we have no demands or conditions on this subject. We have made funds available for the IEBC to do its job. Now they really should deliver,” said Uhuru.

He added: “We only insist that elections be held on October 26, that’s the timeline set by the IEBC in terms of conditions set in the annulment of the Aug 8 elections.”
