Matiang’i declares Wednesday, Thursday as public holidays

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has declared Wednesday a public holiday.

This will allow Kenyans prepare for Thursday’s repeat elections.

In a gazette notice on Tuesday, the CS said the holiday extends to Thursday as well.

Kenyans will once again head to the ballot after the Supreme Court nullified August 8 polls.

The apex court ruled that the election was marred by irregularities and illegalities.

It ordered fresh polls within 60 days from the date of the ruling (September 1).

However, Raila Odinga who had lodged the Presidential petition has since withdrawn from the race.

He says IEBC is in no position to deliver credible polls.

IEBC on the other hand insists that Raila did not withdraw formally and as such, his name will be on the ballot paper.

Other candidates who contested in the bungled polls will also be on the ballot come Thursday.

They are Thirdway Alliance’s Dr Ekuru Aukot, Prof Michael Wainaina, Japeth Kaluyu, Joseph Kavinga and Alliance for Real Change Abduba Dida.
