SGR workers down tools, protest delayed pay for July

Worker at the Nairobi-Mombasa SGR passenger train on Friday downed their tool in protest of delayed salaries.

They staged their protest at the China Roads and Bridges Corporation (CRBC) headquarters in Syokimau.

CRBC is the Chinese firm that built the SGR and has signed a contract to maintain it for the next five years.

The workers said their July salaries have been delayed.

However, in response, CRBC in a statement said the delays are due because of refurbishment on its salary payment system and review of bank accounts details of their staff hired in June and July.

“Our company is debugging the salary system all information input and salary calculation depend on manual calculations at present,” read the statement from the firm.

The form also explained they have delayed salaries because collating bank account details of new workers employed in June and July has taken time.

“The newly added Kenyan staff is numerous; their personal bank account information collection needs a great deal of time.”

Earlier, some employees had protested lack of work contracts with the firm.

But Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina said the workers will be issued with work contracts soon.

It was also revealed that Kenyans SGR workers earn less compared to Chinese workers who earn double or triple of what a Kenyan working on the railway line earns.
