Sh17M recovered from stolen Sh50M at KCB Thika

Police have recovered sh17 million out of sh50 million stolen in one of Kenya’s grand bank heists.

The money was stolen from KCB Thika Branch on November 20 through an underground tunnel that led to the vault which houses the bank’s safe.

It was broken into and the suspects made away with the cash.

Three suspects, Charles Mwangi Murakaru, 30, Halford Munene Murakaru, 32, and Julius Wainaina, 32 were arrested in connection to the theft.

They will be arraigned in court on Monday.

In total, Police recovered Sh17, 135, 000 which was in various denominations including US dollars, pounds, Canadian and Australian dollars.

Of these, was 340 Great Britain Pounds, 1,311 US dollars, 40 South Africa Rand, 85 Australian dollars, 5 Canadian Dollars, 20,000 Ugandan shillings and 46,000 Tanzania shillings.

The money will be transferred to a safe in Nairobi.

“All cash has been transferred to KCB headquarters Nairobi for safe custody,” a detective told the Star.
