Jubilee nominee for Nairobi governorship Senator Mike Sonko has rubbished reports that he has failed to kick-start his campaign since he is “broke”.

In a rejoinder published by the Star on Friday, Sonko termed the claims as baseless and politically driven.

He attributed the malicious reports to his opponents.

Sonko noted that he has been on the ground campaigning for the longest time possible.

“I have been on the ground campaigning. In fact, for the last five years, I am in touch with the people unlike my rivals,” he stated.

Several quarters on Tuesday alleged that the Senator has not been campaigning due to a cash crunch that has hit Jubilee’s Team Nairobi.

It was further alleged that the financiers of the team who are mainly drawn from Murang’a withdrew their support saying that a Sonko governorship would not safeguard their interests.

The report said that Sonko has only been seen campaigning only when the President Uhuru Kenyatta or his Deputy William Ruto are holding a political rally in the city.

Before Jubilee primaries, Mt Kenya caucus in the city was pushing to have Peter Kenneth nominated on a Jubilee ticket but voters spoke against their will.

However, Sonko has dismissed these claims saying that his opponents hoped to gain popularity through such reports.

“They [political rivals] think that by spreading such rumors, they will be popular.”
