Three people have been arrested in Thika in connection to sh50 million theft from KCB Bank in the town on Monday.

The heist was carried out through an underground tunnel that led them to the bank’s vault which houses it safe.

The bank’s Branch Manager Samuel Ngan’ga reported the incident to Thika Police upon discovering what had happened.

He said the vault which houses the safe was opened at 8:30 am.

Two men and a lady have since been arrested in connection with the multi-million shilling theft.

According to Kiambu County Police Commander Adiel Nyange, the three who were arrested played a pivotal role in the heist.

They rented a stall in a building next to the bank  purporting to be selling books but they dug a 30-metre long tunnel leading to the bank.

He said that as reported by the Star, “One is an agent and the other two are custodians of the keys that open these exhibition shops. They will assist us in our investigations.

“It was from here, since June, that they dug the 30-metre long tunnel which was linked to an exhibition stall in a building next to the bank.”

He added that they carted away soil from the tunnel in cartons making it very hard to suspect what was going on.

“In fact, they could even put a book on top of a carton. No one would suspect they were ferrying soil,” said the county police boss.

“They broke into two safes…it is believed they used oxy-acytelene flames to drill holes into them.”

He said at this point, it is hard to tell if there were some bank officials involved in the theft.

“It is still early to say whether it was an inside job. Investigations will determine so.”
