Raila to be sworn-in as ”President” next week on Tuesday

Opposition leader Raila Odinga

The National Super Alliance is a planning a parallel swearing-in ceremony for Raila Odinga as Kenya’s fifth President.

The ceremony is slated to be held on Tuesday next week, the same day President Uhuru Kenyatta will be sworn-in after his victory was upheld by the Supreme Court on Monday.

A six-judge bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice David Maraga unanimously upheld Uhuru’s victory.

“The court has unanimously determined that the petitions are not merited,” the CJ read in his brief ruling.

Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Justices Njoki Ndungu, Jackton Ojwang, Smokin Wanjala and Isaac Lenaola heard and determined the case.

The petition had been filed by former Kilome MP Harun Mwau and Njono Mue-ICJ Kenyan chapter Chair together with Muhuri Chairman Khelef Khalifa.

Raila insists he does not recognize Uhuru’s Presidency.

“We in NASA had repeatedly declared before this Supreme Court ruling today that we consider this government to be illegitimate and we do not recognize it.

“This position has not been changed by the court ruling, which does not come as a surprise,” he said in a statement on Monday through his adviser Salim Lone.

Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama told the Star that they will continue with Raila’s swearing-in plans.

“We are going ahead with the swearing-in, as planned,” said Muthama.

Understandably, there are several quarters within the opposition who are opposed to this move.

They have cited that it is a bad move since it will lead to confrontations with Jubilee regime.
