Unrest looming as UoN students protests Babu Owino’s arrest

Students from the University of Nairobi Law School in Parklands are planning for an agitation towards the release of Embakasi MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino.

Babu was arrested on Friday outside Parliament buildings over assault and taken to Parklands Police Station where he has been locked up since.

He is alleged to have beaten up a guard in Westlands.

In a post on facebook moments after his arrest, he said,  “Been arrested. Held at Parklands. Charges are two. Harbouring intention to overthrow government. Assault. It shall be well.”

Today, in mid morning hours, he posted: “There is no power like people power!!
What I am going through because of the rogue regime will not last forever. Justice will eventually prevail.”

This post seems to have irked the law students at UoN where he served as the student leader before he was elected to Parliament on August 8.

Chairman for the Students Union of Nairobi University Jamal Sifa  said “Babu must be released or they release on them (police).”

He said Babu is not wrong and blamed government for trying to intimidate him.

“Babu is not wrong. Government is trying to test what we can do. From today till Friday, the day Babu will be released, we will release on them with no mercy,” said Jamal.

The Embakasi legislator is not new to controversy.

Last year, he was arrested severally on accounts of assaulting a fellow student and spent several nights behind bars after issuing derogatory statements directed at President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

After appearing at the Milimani Law court and was released on bond, he was whisked away by police and locked up before he was arraigned at Kibera Law court to answer to charges of assault.

In the charges, he is alleged to have assaulted a voter in his constituency.
