Former Senator allied to Jubilee to be charged with theft, abuse of office

Ex-nominated Senator Joy Gwendo is set to appear in court on Monday to after she was arrested by EACC detectives on Friday.

Gwendo, nominated by the defunct TNA party has been accused of theft of Sh2.2 million and abuse of office.

The Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko gave a nod to EACC to arrest and charge the Senator for issuing bouncing cheques to members of a co-operative society in Kisumu on diverse dates between October and December 2016.

The money was raised through a fundraiser to help the co-operative society members in her rural home. However, EACC said, she only remitted Sh200, 000 of the total amount fundraised.

The rest of the money, she issued bouncing cheques.

Gwendo has already recorded a statement with EACC and was released of Sh100, 000 bail. She will appear in court on Monday.

However, in her defense, she said he she reads an political underhand in the charges preferred on her by EACC.

Her tenure as nominated Senator was marred by controversy. At one point, she got saved by a whisker from being expelled by TNA for “errant behavior” and alleged “spying for the opposition”.

She hit the headlines in 2016 after reports of assaulting her personal assistant which was backed by a viral video doing rounds on social media.
