US gives Kenya millions towards Uhuru, Raila talks

The United States Government is not backing down in its push for dialogue between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his archenemy Raila Odinga.

The Donald Trump led administration has set aside funds amounting to Sh60 million to facilitate the talks between the two main political players, reports the Standard.

US Embassy in Nairobi on Sunday confirmed that the Western state is ready to provide funding geared towards a national dialogue.

US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec also affirmed that his mother country has set aside a considerable amount of money towards hitting off the national conversation.

“We are working with Kenyan business, religious and community leaders, as well as other international partners on organising a potential National Conversation and we have funds to support it,” the envoy told the Standard.

In such a case, the money provided by the US will foot the bills for the venue where the talks are to take place, refreshments and other costs that may arise.

Godec, believed to pushing an agenda for the US in whole, has been persistent in calling for immediate, sustained and constructive national dialogue between Uhuru and Raila.

A fortnight ago, he met the Leaders of Minority in Parliament and Senate, John Mbadi and Moses Wetangula respectively.

Here, he reiterated that dialogue was the only way to end the impasse between NASA and Jubilee is through dialogue.

“The US is committed to a national conversation involving all Kenyans to build national unity, address long-standing issues and resolve divisions exacerbated by the 2017 electoral process,” he said.

He also cautioned NASA against its hyped plan to swear-in Raila on January 30.

And in a pattern likely to suggest Jubilee has hearkened to US’ call to dialogue, the President on Wednesday during an official visit to South Africa said he will embark on bringing rival political parties together.

“We want to see political parties start to work together and partner in policy making as such partnerships will play a key role in reconnecting with people hence establishing stronger bonds,” said Uhuru.
