The United States has issued a travel advisory to its citizens travelling to Kenya.

The US State Department issued the advisory against the backdrop of possible violence during and after repeat polls on October 17.

“Rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice,” read the statement issued on Wednesday as quoted by the Star.

The US warned its citizens that with the polls, there may be a lacuna for criminal elements or terrorists.

“Even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence,” read the statement.

Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu and parts of Kilifi county are six regions which the State Department mapped as a no go zone during the polling period.

“Although there is no indication that US citizens may be targets of violence, you are urged to exercise caution and remain abreast of the security situation throughout the electoral period.”

“You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.”
