Where is Chebukati? Kenyans ask after NASA’s dossier

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Chairman Wafula Chebukati has raised eyebrows after missing from key events pitting the electoral commission and the opposition, NASA.

On Friday, NASA released an alleged dossier indicating that contrary to what IEBC published after the August 8 polls, NASA had won the elections.

Siaya Senator James Orengo together with a host of other NASA allied politicians released a document which they said shows the real figures in the disputed polls.

In this dossier, it revealed, Raila was ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta with 8.1 million votes against the latter’s 7.9 million votes.

They said an analysis of data in IEBC servers by their IT experts revealed that Raila won in 26 counties while Uhuru won in only 21.

However, going by IEBC’s figures, Uhuru won the elections after garnering 8.2 million votes and Raila came in second with slightly over 7 million votes.

With such accusations being leveled against the commission, it was expected that Chebukati would give a formal statement to refute the allegations by NASA.

But it was his vice chair, Connie Maina who signed the rebuttal statement trashing NASA’s claims.

“We note that this is not the first time such claims have been made. Indeed, on August 10, 2017, NASA presented to the commission figures allegedly obtained from the IEBC servers showing that Raila Odinga had won the election,” read part of the statement signed by Maina as quoted by the Star.

This effectively raised questions of the whereabouts of the IEBC chair who sources at the commission said is on official duty in Israel.

Chebukati has not made much of public appearance since October 30 when he declared President Uhuru as the winner of the October 26 repeat polls.
