Heavy rains currently hitting different parts of the country have so far killed 194 people, the government has said.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa on Wednesday during a press briefing said that floods have and landslides are the country’s new headache after coronavirus.

“Since yesterday, we have lost 30 people in the last 44 hours. Now in total 194 lives have been lost,” Wamalwa said.

He warned that residents of some parts of Garissa, River Nyando, River Nzoia, River Tana, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot are at more risk of wiped out by deluge.

“We are appealing to residents around these areas to move out.”

His sentiments were echoed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i who said that those living in flood-prone areas should heed to government’s advice to move to safer areas.

The Kenya Meteorological Department early this week warned that heavy rainfall will continue pounding different parts of the country.

The Met Department said Central, Rift Valley, Coast and Western Regions will receive heavy rainfall up to the end of May.

Already, Masinga Dam which generates Kenya’s power and Turkwel Dam are almost overflowing.
