Presidential aspirant, Philip Murgor bows out of the race citing security concerns

Just four months to the general elections, United Democratic Movement (UDM) Presidential Candidate Philip Murgor has bowed off the race.

In a press statement early this week, the former Director of Public Prosecution defended his decision to bow out citing several reasons.

First, he said that the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett failed to accord him security as is the case with other leaders.

“Upon declaring my candidature for the presidency, I immediately requested (IG Joseph) Boinnet for the provision of an armed police bodyguard for my personal security, both as a former Director of Public Prosecutions and a presidential candidate,” Murgor said.

The lack of security, he explained, has forced him to stay off the campaign trail as security in some parts of the country remains a challenge.

“The lack of personal security has, therefore, prevented me from traversing (not necessarily holding campaign rallies) the country like all other presidential candidates and party leaders, to market UDM as a political party, or my candidature generally, given the current violent nature of campaigns, political activity, and insecurity in the country generally,” he went on.

He also cited that his late entry into the race has as well informed his decision to bolt from the closely contested Presidential race and poor media coverage on his bid as another reason.

Pundits argue that he realized he had no financial muscle to take on the Presidential campaign which is expensive. However, he has dismissed the narrative arguing that he could fund-raise and get enough funds to keep him on the campaign trail.

Murgor who has served as a public servant for many years and as a lawyer for Kenya’s second President Daniel Arap Moi, had earlier on maintained that his leadership would slay corruption and ethnicity, both of which have dogged Jubilee regime.
