State House: Government working on lowering cost of living

State House has assured Kenyans of continued efforts by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his administration to lower the cost of living.

In a press statement, State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu said that Uhuru is aware of the misery Kenyans have been through especially due to high maize flour prices.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta recognized the misery caused by the strained maize production and supply of food occasioned by one of the severest droughts in the country’s history and measures have been taken to bring down the cost of maize flour,” Esipisu stated.

He said that government has already started acting on normalizing the situation.

“The bottom line for us is that Unga is affordable again to the ordinary Kenyan and no matter the amount of debate or the amount of inquisition, there is likely nothing that can be done to change the fact that 2kg Unga cost Ksh90,”he said.

Esipisu also defended government from assertions by opposition leaders that lowering the prices of maize flour is a campaign strategy for Jubilee.

He described it as the “most warped” argument he has heard since, “the weather cannot conspire with campaigns.”

However, milk prices still remain high. A packet of milks is retailing at sh60 while a 1kg packet of sugar retails at sh185.

A few days ago, the President chided opposition leader Raila Odinga for allegedly using the drought situation that has pushed up the prices of basic commodities to gain political mileage.

He also said that while drought has affected prices of maize flour in the market, Raila is also to blame because the same happened in 2011 when he was a Prime Minister in the coalition government and he failed to handle it well; today, it ahs had ripple effects on Jubilee government.
