IEBC committed to conducting credible polls, says Chebukati

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has spoken about the October 26 repeat polls.

Chebukati in a statement to newsrooms on Monday said the ruling by Supreme Court serves to show that the electoral commission is committed to a course.

He said IEBC conducted free, fair and credible polls.

He also said the commission is waiting for the full judgment to be issued in the next 21 days for them to conduct post-election evaluation.

“We await the judgment to inform our post-election evaluation that is about to commence as well as initiatives focused on developing our institution and enhancing electoral democracy,” said the Chairman.

Chief Justice David Maraga, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu together with Justices J.B Ojwang, Njoki Ndungu, Smokin Wanjala and Isaac Lenaola unanimously upheld the election.

IEBC has been on the spotlight since the nullification of August 8 polls.

Ex-commissioner Dr Roselyn Akombe resigned a week to the repeat polls.

She cited the commission lacks capacity to conduct free and credible polls.

Chebukati in a presser after Akombe’s resignation said he cannot guarantee free, fair and credible polls.
