Two western nations, Kenya’s key allies have hailed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s resolve to unite the country.
In emissaries sent to Uhuru after taking presidential oath in the presence of over 80, 000 Kenyans, the UK and US hailed his conciliatory tone in his inauguration speech.
UK’s Minister for Africa, Rory Stewart noted Uhuru’s commitment towards uniting Kenyans will heal tribal rifts widened by a lengthy and divisive political season.
“Today marks the moment where Kenya can move forward after a prolonged, divisive, election period in a new spirit of reconciliation. I hope that all Kenyans will recognise the need now for national dialogue and healing,” said Stewart as reported by the Star.
He added that UK was intent on working closely with Kenya in business and development programmes.
“The UK has extensive and historic links with Kenya, through our business links, our development programmes, and our diasporas. This has been an opportunity to reaffirm our partnership and hear more about the ways that our two countries can work together.”
The US in a statement by Heather Nauert, Spokesman of the US Department of State, Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs said they are wary of political tension in the country.
“Even as we look forward to strengthening and renewing the bilateral partnership in the years ahead, we are deeply concerned by the ongoing political tensions in Kenya.”
“We encourage all Kenyans to come together at this critical moment and to work together peacefully and uphold the constitution.
The US is advocating for joint national dialogue between the two key political player; Uhuru and Raila Odinga.
This, it says, will heal tribal divisions reportedly wiping through Kenya’s 42 tribes.
