Bishop Margaret Wanjiru stays in custody as case shelved

BY Jamhuri News Reporter

Bishop Margaret Wanjru’s case got a reprieve on Tuesday, resulting to it being shelved pending her appeal in the High Court against Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi’s previous order on Thursday, which had asked that she be detained for five days pending investigations.

Wanjiru was arrested after allegedly damaging election materials when she, together with a group of chaotic youth, stormed a polling station during Jubilee primaries.

The magistrate, however, refused to release Wanjiru on bond, saying she must spend five extra nights in custody so as to serve as an example in preventing election chaos.

Her lawyer, Kennedy Ochieng, argued that the ruling was too harsh on the Bishop, adding that it goes against her rights as a citizen.

Wanjiru pleaded not guilty to malicious damage of property and creating a disturbance.

The prosecution had earlier asked that she be detained for five days so as to keep her from interfering with witnesses since she is an ”influential person”.  The magistrate then detained her until yesterday, when she was to be freed on a Sh500,000 bond and two sureties.

Wanjiru remains in custody and the case will now be mentioned on June 27.
