Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is set to name city businesswoman Agnes Kagure Kariuki as his deputy Wednesday, reports from City Hall indicate.

According to Nairobi News, the Governor is likely to forward Kagure’s name to the Nairobi County Assembly for approval.

This follows the resignation of Polycarp Igathe. Igathe tendered his resignation in mid-January where he cited that he cannot continue working with the governor citing trust issues.

Kagure who previously worked for CFC insurance emerged the top candidate to fill Igathe’s position in a crowded list of former politicians including Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, EALA MP Simon Mbugua, Karen Nyamnu who contested for Nairobi women representative seat and Susan Silantoi who contested for the county’s Senatorship.

A source at City Hall told Nairobi News that “I was reliably informed that [Ms Kariuki] is the lucky one and that the announcement might come as early as Wednesday.”

Though little is known of her, she has been a loyal Jubilee Party activist.

There has been intense lobbying from business circles and politicians as well hoping one of their own are picked to fill Igathe’s void at City Hall.

The Supreme Court gave a go ahead to governors whose counties have no deputy governor to nominate one as the there is no legal provision in the Constitution for the nomination/appointment of a deputy governor in case the office falls vacant.
