‘Githeri man’ Itumbi, Alai, Rufftone among those honored during Jamhuri fete

Martin Kamotho,alias Githeri Man is among dozens of Kenyans honored by President Uhuru Kenyatta during Jamhuri day fete marked at Kasarani stadium today.

Kamotho shot to stardom during the August 8 polls.

He was pictured in a queue ready to cast his ballot but strikingly, he held a plastic bag with githeri which he was munching.

The photo went viral on social media and within no time, Kamotho, a father one was walking from one media house to another for interviews.

His life took a different turn after the viral photo; he is now a proud owner of a plot within the environs of Nairobi courtesy of a real estate firm in the city.

Blogger Robert Alai and State House Director of Digital and Diaspora Communications Dennis Itumbi are also lined up for the honor fete.

The honors and medals are given to Kenyans who exhibit distinguished and outstanding performance to other Kenyans in their line of work.

President Uhuru Kenyatta awards them upon recommendation by the National Honours and Awards Committee in his office.

A similar committee in the National Assembly also recommends which politicians should be honored by the President.

In this year’s Jamhuri fete, 64 Kenyans from diverse background and political affiliation will be feted.

They include Hellen Nkaiserry, widow to former Interior CS Joseph Nkaiserry.

The honors include Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya-the highest honor in Kenya, The Order of the Burning Spear, The Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya and The Distinguished Conduct Order.

Medals awarded include the Uhodari medal, The Distinguished Service Medal and The Silver Star of Kenya

Others who were honored according to the Star include Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u, musicians Ben Githae, Roy Smith Matia alias Ruffton, hon Farah Mohammed Manzoor and Kenyan boxer Fatuma Zarika.
