Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will not vie for the Governor’s position in 2022.

The governor says since he started his political career, he has never vied for the same office twice.

He says his job between now and 2022 is to leave a legacy behind of a city that has all systems working.

“I want to leave a legacy because I will not be running for a second term. I have never run for the same office twice in my political life, so why should this be the first time? he told the Nairobian in an interview.

He added: “I will deliver and leave an efficient office for Nairobians then move on to the next assignment for Kenyans.”

Asked if he is angling for the Presidency in 2022, he replies in ambiguity.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself! I could even vie for a county assembly seat (MCA). I mean, that is one seat I have never contested for!”

For now, he says “[his] focus is on working round-the-clock to ensure that we get Nairobi running like the world class city it ought to be.”

Sonko also trashed a recent opinion poll that ranked the county as the second worst in performance after Homa bay County.

He notes that within the first 100 days in office which was the basis of the opinion poll, they have achieved much including “increasing and streamlining revenue collection, curbing corruption and reigning in on city cartels.”

He avers that Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city that should not be compared to provincial counties.

“You cannot rate a cosmopolitan county like Nairobi with a provincial county within 100 days. We don’t even receive the same shareable revenue within those days,” says the Nairobi Governor in defense of his track record.

Since he took office, a section of Nairobi residents feel the Governor has not done much as they would have expected.

Hawker menace in the city has been a force Nairobians have had to contend with. The governor, however, says that this will come to an end soon.

The County government, explains the Governor, is in the process of acquiring city markets where they will relocate the hawkers soon.
