Retired President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi has expressed confidence in his once political godson, Uhuru Kenyatta uniting the country.

In acknowledging that Kenya is sharply divided after the last two elections, Moi said Uhuru has wisdom that will slay tribalism which is the root cause of disunity in the country.

In his congratulatory message after Supreme Court’s verdict, on Monday he said having served in Uhuru’s position as President, a tough job of uniting Kenyans awaits him but he will ultimately make it.

“Having served in the position that you hold today, I know the huge task that you are about to face in your second term as you try to unite the country against a backdrop of deep political and ethnic divisions,” he said as the Star quotes.

“I am however confident that in your wisdom, your Excellency will soon embark on a policy path that will unite Kenyans by ensuring that everybody feels part and parcel of project Kenya.”

Moi is the second and longest serving Kenyan President.

He served for 24 years until 2002 when a political tide championed by retired President Mwai Kibaki swept him away.

Moi also expressed hope in Uhuru’s capability to “jump-start” the economy which took a bend with a heightened political season.

Uhuru in his message to Kenyans after the Supreme Court verdict promised to unite the country and serve all Kenyans regardless of their political affiliation.

Moi also called on the opposition led by Raila Odinga to accept the call for unity and be part of Kenya’s democratic growth.

“I, therefore, urge them[NASA] to have the courage to accept your call for unity and work with you in finding sustainable solutions and advocating for reforms that bolster inclusive institutions that address long-standing societal grievances in the spirit of brotherhood.”
