Nairobi-based foreign journalist deported from Zimbabwe as coup attempts heightens

A Nairobi-based foreign journalist was among seven other people who were turned away minutes after in a Zimbabwe on Thursday.

Tamera Griffin is a correspondent with an American website, BuzzFeed. She left Kenya Wednesday at 9pm.

But after she landed in Zimbabwe at 12:30am, she was held for about 20 minutes by immigration officials at Robert Mugabe International Airport before she was directed to another plane to her country of origin.

She was only asked who she works for before she was denied further entry into the country seemingly under military coup.

Through her twitter page, she wrote: “I landed in Zim around 12:30am. Majority of the folks in immigration line were journalists. I believe there were nine of us; two got through. The rest were all sent back. We still do not have our passports.”

“They asked who I worked for and if I was there for business, that’s it. Next thing I know they are rushing me to sign a form so we can go back.”

She however says she saw no military personnel at the Airport; just immigration officials.

The military has staged a coup in the country seemingly to put an end to Robert Mugabe’s rule.

Mugabe and his wife Grace have been placed under house arrest for the last 24 hours.

Senior military officials too have been detained. Military has however denied reports that they are staging a coup to take over power from the longer serving President.
