NASA, Jubilee dismiss run-off notion after Ipsos poll results

ODM Chairman John Mbadi and Jubilee’s Johnson Sakaja have both dismissed the notion that the county could have a run-off after the August 8 polls.

This is after Ipsos Synovate released a new poll on Tuesday showing NASA’s Raila Odinga (42%) was five points below Jubilee’s Uhuru Kenyatta who got 47 percent.

The poll also showed that in NASA’s strongholds of Western and Coast regions, the number of undecided voters was quite high and would deny either party 50 plus one votes required to clinch victory in a general election.

Mbadi who spoke at Citizen TV on Tuesday said a run-off is highly unlikely.

“That is highly unlikely in the circumstances we are in. Run-off becomes possible where you have a third serious and strong candidate; in our case, we don’t have that,” said Mbadi.

The Suba MP maintained that going by NASA’s assessment, they will carry the day on August 8.

“One Presidential candidate will win out of the two and I will tell you for a fact that based on our assessment, I think we are going to carry this,” Mbadi added.

Sakaja also said a run-off is highly unlikely. “I don’t think there will be a run-off. It will be decided in the first round and I am confident Jubilee will carry the day.”

Ipsos conducted the poll between May 11 and May 22 with a sample size of 2, 026 respondents with a margin error of – or + 2.8.

It has a 95 percent confidence level.
