The much-awaited Smart Driving Licenses will be rolled out between April and May, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.

The new licenses will have an electronic chip fitted in them and will hold the driver’s data including traffic offences if any, his KRA PIN, blood group and his ID number.

This will effectively address discipline among Kenya drivers.

NTSA legal officer Judy Opiri yesterday according to Nairobi News said they are almost done in rolling out the new digital licenses.

She revealed that the authority was reviewing existing laws to come up with better legislation which will see enable prosecution of those who flout traffic rules as well as institute a mechanism for instant fines for traffic offenders.

NTSA had earlier said that the roll out would be due by October last year. This, however, did not happen.

Director General Francis Meja said the Smart Licenses will help deal with incessant traffic offences by Kenyan drivers the most common being driving wrongly.

“The most common offence by drivers is driving wrongly. We believe the licenses will help tame traffic offenders as the cost is high. It will help change their behavior,” he said.

The migration will take three years. Those renewing their licenses will be required to apply for the Smart license.
