Ruto vs Rutto, who is Rift Valley’s political supremo?

Sharp divisions have emerged in Deputy President William Ruto’s home turf with the crowning of Jubilee rebel and Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto as Kipsigis community spokesperson.

The Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) boss was crowned in a colorful event on Saturday at Bomet’s Green Stadium.

But this has caused  sharp division among Myoot elders who hold divergent views on the crowning of Rutto as the community’s spokesperson.

Some Kalenjin elders both from Bomet and Nakuru feel that his crowning could further divide the community.

Joseph Sang from Kuresoi noted that the move will split Kalenjin sub-tribes. He also said that those who crowned him defied a directive from the Myoot Elders chairman not to crown him.

“The elders who crowned him defied a directive by Myoot Council of Elders national chairman Paul Leleito, who opposed it,” said the elder as told by the Star.

“If such an endorsement was necessary, we would have discussed it as Kalenjin elders but a few of us did it on their own.”

He maintained the community is led by the DP and no other spokesperson should be installed to speak for a particular Kalenjin sub-tribe.

The two leaders have been embroiled in a supremacy battle over control of Rift Valley.

Pundits argue that the DP is Rift Valley’s political supremo while others say he is losing grip especially with the emergence of CCM which has gained popularity in the South Rift.

The Bomet Governor who doubles up as a NASA principal has in the past dispelled claim that his nemesis is in control or Rift Valley politics.
