Six people perished Monday after a semi-permanent wall collapsed in Mombasa’s Kizingo area. The six include four children and their mother who were sheltering from the rains when the wall collapsed, covering them alive under the structure.

The sixth victim is said to be a cassava vendor who was also sheltering from the rains. Their remains have since been retrieved and taken to a local mortuary.

Mombasa police chief, Mr. Lucas Ogara said the five were from one family, and that police are investigating the matter. Search and rescue operation was led by the Kenya Red Cross.

An alert has been issued by the Mombasa County Government as more landslides could be possible.

The county officials said Changamwe, Mikindani and Jomvu as likely areas to be affected by the ongoing heavy rains.

Residents blamed the county government for failing to maintain the drainage system in the area.
